Q: What is the age requirement for paid summer positions? A: The age requirement for paid summer positions is 18 years old, or 17 years old and graduated from high school. If you are not a graduating senior this year, you may consider the E.L.I.T.E. program.
Q: I want to work at SAMBICA, but I can’t work the whole summer. Should I still apply? A: Yes. Please apply. In some cases, we may be able to accommodate your schedule. Bear in mind, strong consideration is given to those who can work for the entire summer. Make sure when you apply that you specify which dates conflict with our summer schedule. Time off must be written on your contract and cleared through the Program Director prior to hire.
Q: What if I cannot attend staff training? A: If you know that you cannot attend staff training in part, or in full, I would still encourage you to apply. Some exceptions can be made. If hired, we would require you to attend a First Aid and CPR training class near you, at your own expense. There may be additional requirements depending upon position. All Staff must complete our CTS (online training) before arrival.
Q: Do you accept volunteers? A: Yes. Call us to arrange your applicability. Volunteers must still undergo the same application process and submit to a background check.
Q: Do you accept foreign students for summer employment? A: SAMBICA is a much richer community when we have a diverse staff. We would be very excited about having foreign students here. We are able to pay foreign students who have a U.S. Temporary Work Visa. Attaining a visa requires a bunch of paperwork, time, and some personal expense. The easiest way that SAMBICA could accept a foreign student is for you to join our staff on a volunteer basis. SAMBICA, in most cases, could pay for the flight and room and board while foreign staffer are here. Some restrictions may apply.
Q: When do you start interviewing people? A: We will set up interviews with applicants as soon as possible after having received their application. Ususally this will be within two weeks of applying. Feel free to contact Andy, the Program Director at any point in the process by calling the office at 888.SAMBICA (888.726.2422) or emailing him andy@sambica.com. We do our best to hire people as they apply, so the sooner you apply the better.
Q: I live in a different state, but I would like an interview. What do I do? A: No worries. We are perfectly comfortable conducting phone interviews. We will check your references... so pick people that really know you well.
Q: Do you provide First Aid and CPR certification during staff training? A: Yes. If you do not currently have Standard First Aid and CPR certification, we will provide instruction and certification during staff training for $35. Wheter you need one or both the cost will still be $35. All summer staff are required to have current First Aid and CPR certification.
Q: Do you also provide lifeguard certification as a part of staff training? A: No. If you are applying to be a lifeguard, we ask that you attend a lifeguard certification class near you, at your own expense. Make sure that your certification includes waterfront training.
Q: If hired, do you pay for travel expenses? A: Ordinarily we do not. Depending upon our staffing needs, we may consider advancing pay for travel expenses. If you would like to volunteer during the summer, SAMBICA will consider paying for your travel expenses. This must be negotiated at the time of hire, approved by the Program Director, and written into your contract.
Q: Why can't we get new tattoos or piercings while we are employed at SAMBICA?
A: New tattoos and piercings are a health issue for our summer staff. Many of the activities we have at camp involve getting into the waters of Lake Sammamish. Lake Sammamish is a fairly clean lake, but infections still happen. By choosing to get a new tattoo or piercing during the summer you open the door to getting an infection that could prevent you from doing your job. We are not taking a theological stand about tattoos and piercings. You are welcome to have healed tattoos and piercings prior to employment with SAMBICA.
Q: Do summer staff stay at the camp on weekends?
A: Yes. There is no need to find another place to stay on weekends. Camp is your home for the summer. We have a staff fridge which we try to keep stocked with leftovers on weekends. Several washers and dryers are available for staff use. On some weekends we have required staff activities, such as the staff banquet (July 31st). The other weekends are your time off. On you time off, you are welcome to come and go from camp at your leisure.
Q: If I don't have a car at camp, how can I get to the store for personal items?
A: Many of our summer staff do have cars. So in some cases you could get a ride from another staff member. If need, we are able to bus staff into town occasionally.
Q: What is the weather like in the summer?
A: You couldn't ask for better weather. Summers are always warm. Typically temperatures range from 70 - 85 degrees with low humidity. Every once in a while we will have temperatures in the 90s. On average we will have only a couple days of rain between June 25 - Aug 25.
Q: How much time off do we get?
A: All positions can expect between 3 and 5 (1 hour) break times during the week. Also, staff get time off on the weekends from Friday at midnight to Sunday at 1:30 pm. This will exclude the Baseball game weekend and the Banquet weekend.
Q: Are you affiliated with a specific church or denomination?
A: No. SAMBICA is an inter-denominational ministry.
Q: How do I get to church on Sunday?
A: For our summer staffers, church attendance is strongly encouraged. Due to the diversity of denominations represented, our summer staff will sometimes scatter to attend several different churches on Sunday morning. Many of our staff carpool to church. We also bus staff to at least one or two churches this summer. While SAMBICA does not endorse a specific church denomination, the following churches are some of the favorites for our summer staff: Seattle Mosaic, Overlake Christian Church, The City Church, and Mars Hill.
